What is PMDD?
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe hormone sensitivity condition that causes intense emotional, physical, and cognitive symptoms in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle the week or two before a period. Unlike typical PMS, PMDD can disrupt daily life, relationships and mental wellbeing.
It's not caused by abnormal hormone levels, but by the body's heightened sensitivity to normal hormonal changes, particularly progesterone and serotonin fluctuations.
Recognising PMDD is key to understanding invisible hormonal challenges and supporting those affected.

Authors Note: One of the most frustrating parts of my PMDD journey has been the lack of research and the limited tools available to help make sense of what’s happening in the body and mind. For so long, it felt like PMDD was sitting in the dark corners of women’s health — recognised by those living it, but barely explored in clinical spaces. But there’s a real shift happening now.
I’m encouraged by the new energy in PMDD research across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and America — especially the focus on lived experience alongside clinical investigation. Researchers, advocates, and communities are finally pushing this conversation forward. As new findings emerge, I’m genuinely excited to learn, grow, and share that knowledge with you, so we can navigate this space with more clarity, compassion, and confidence.
